Cosimo de' Medici was one of the most important and influential figures in the Italian Renaissance. As the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, he ruled Florence from 1537 to 1574. During his reign, he transformed the city into a major center of art, culture, and learning. He also played a key role in the Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation.
In his book, Monarchy and Sacral Politics in Duke Cosimo de' Medici's Florence, John Najemy examines the ways in which Cosimo used religious imagery and rituals to legitimize his rule and promote his political agenda. Najemy argues that Cosimo's use of sacral politics was a key factor in his success as a ruler.
The book is divided into three parts.
- Part I: The Religious Foundations of Cosimo's Rule
- Part II: The Political Uses of Religious Imagery
- Part III: The Legacy of Cosimo's Sacral Politics
In Part I, Najemy examines the religious beliefs and practices of Cosimo and his court. He shows how Cosimo used his personal piety to legitimize his rule and to promote his political agenda.
In Part II, Najemy examines the ways in which Cosimo used religious imagery and rituals to promote his political agenda. He shows how Cosimo used art, architecture, and music to create a sense of awe and reverence around his person and his rule.
In Part III, Najemy examines the legacy of Cosimo's sacral politics. He shows how Cosimo's use of religious imagery and rituals has continued to shape the political culture of Florence.
Monarchy and Sacral Politics in Duke Cosimo de' Medici's Florence is a groundbreaking study of one of the most important figures in the Italian Renaissance. Najemy's book provides a new understanding of the ways in which Cosimo used religious imagery and rituals to legitimize his rule and promote his political agenda.
